How Rent-to-Own Tires Work: A Simple Step-by-Step Walkthrough
From application to installation — exactly what to expect when you rent to own.
Tires are one of the few car expenses you cannot safely put off. When the tread is gone, it is gone, and the bill usually arrives at the worst possible time. Rent-to-own exists for exactly that gap: you get the tires you need now and pay for them in small amounts over time.
Here is what the process actually looks like from start to finish.
Step 1: Find tires that fit your vehicle
There are three ways to search. By vehicle, where you enter your year, make, model and trim. By size, if you already know it. Or by brand, if you have a preference.
Trim matters more than most people expect. Two versions of the same model year often take different tire sizes, so picking your exact trim is what gets you accurate results.
If you are not sure what you need, you can upload a photo of your tire sidewall and have the size read for you.
Step 2: Apply online
The application is short and takes about a minute. Because rent-to-own is a rental agreement rather than a loan, the review works differently than a traditional credit application. There is no credit check. Your credit is not pulled and your score is not part of the decision. Available terms vary by provider and location.
Have your ID, your address, and basic income or employment information ready and it goes quickly.
Step 3: Choose your payment term
Available terms typically include 52, 65, or 78 week options. A shorter term means fewer payments overall. A longer term spreads the cost across more weeks, which generally lowers each individual payment.
Which options you see depends on the provider, your location, and the tires you pick.
Step 4: Get started for $10
At participating locations, $10 is what it takes to get started. Your regular payment schedule begins after that, on the term you selected.
Step 5: Have them installed locally
Once you are approved and your tires are selected, installation is arranged through a participating local shop. What is included in installation varies by provider and tire selection, so it is worth asking what the appointment covers before you go in. Many shops can get you in the same day.
How this differs from financing
A rental agreement is not a loan. You are renting the tires with the option to own them at the end of the term, which means there is no traditional debt and no interest in the way a credit product carries interest.
Because it is a rental, it generally comes with flexibility a loan would not offer, including the ability to return the tires. Your provider can walk you through exactly how that works under their agreement.
What to know before you start
Approval, available terms, and payment amounts vary, and not every applicant will qualify for every option. TireRentals.com is not a lender. We help connect drivers with participating providers who may offer flexible tire payment options.
If you are ready, start by searching for tires that fit your vehicle and apply online. A local shop will take it from there.
